12:30 PM

Winnie pondered how to respond.

2:30 PM

Winnie placed her phone down on the coffee table before Jeff responded. She ensured her phone was on silent before she started reading her book. She hadn’t been able to sit down to read a book unrelated to her job since high school because college was full of class readings and studying. It was rare to have down time at all. If she did have down time, she thought it was best spent with her boyfriend at the time. She learned her lesson on that subject real quick, faster than she learned anything else in class.

She dived deep into the mysterious characters playing out the scenes within her book. She hadn’t read a Christian romance before. Her gran suggested the book because she claimed it would be good for her to understand things of God and how to wait for her husband. Upon first accepting the book, she hoped it wasn’t boring. She was delighted to find it full of life and action within the first chapter.

She got sucked into the book so fast, she barely noticed the dismal display playing out around her. She glanced up for a moment to see her siblings goofing off while watching tv. She decided to return to her room. She wanted to keep to herself and focus on the amazing book. Her gran was right. It had a lot of answers to her questions about life and Jesus.

On her way upstairs, her siblings threw her rude glances. Her brother, Josiah, hit them and told them to stop, which resulted in an argument. Winnie walked away because she didn’t want to get involved or make things worse for Josiah.

Once she was in her bedroom, she silently shut her door to ensure she didn’t receive any visitors. She was immediately reminded of the times she locked herself in her room after arguments with her siblings or Jeff. Her bedroom was the only safe place in the house she could escape to when the world around her shook uncontrollably.

Jeff was the only one who could cheer her up. Their regular through the door talks facilitated fun moments around all the chaos. He was a great friend when she really needed him, in the past and present.

Now I feel guilty for not responding last night... I just really don’t like the close proximity we are sharing now. I’m growing feelings he doesn’t reciprocate. I can’t afford to get hurt again, especially not by him.

Winnie sat on the bench by the glass window with anticipation for the latest details in her book. She felt she could actually relate to the main character, Gen. Although her father wasn’t neglectful like the main character’s father. She could relate to many other issues Gen seemed to face, including issues with men.

While Winnie read, her mind wandered to Jeff. He was short with his text messages, as was she. She wondered if he got the hint to give her space. It would be refreshing for some time away from him.
